Te Pito O Na Maeha’A (Twins Pito)

Te pito o na maeha'a, literally the navel of the twins, is the name of the place. A reference to the myth that, according to the inhabitants, makes Maupiti the religious center of the Leeward Islands, the island where all the rulers of the Pacific were enthroned. "According to the prophecy, false twins were to be born: a girl who was to rule the island and a boy who was to be the island's hero. But, as in Greek tragedies, nothing goes as planned. And, two boys are born. They are now resting on this marae," said Papa Maui, a Maupiti resident.
