A formalized strategy for the development of tourism

Fari’ira’a Manihini 2027 (FM27) is the strategy for the development of tourism in French Polynesia over the next five years. Its aim is to position The Islands of Tahiti as a leading destination for inclusive and sustainable tourism.  This development strategy was officially presented to the Tahitian tourism industry during the Assises du Tourisme conference in November 2022.

Developed in collaboration with the local population and tourism professionals from both the public and private sectors, the FM27 establishes a plan of action up to 2027, with the main objectives being to protect natural resources, promote and protect our cultural heritage, optimize the  economic and social benefits of tourism for the local population, and provide a high quality visitor experience.

Tahiti Tourisme joins the Global Sustainable Tourism Council

Tahiti Tourisme has joined the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) and pledged to adhere to their standards for sustainable tourism. Going forward, any actions taken will be based on informed decisions and will ensure the responsible development of the destination. The Islands of Tahiti will comply with the criteria set  by the international body. In addition, Tahiti Tourisme’s management team has completed the Sustainable Travel Course of the the GSTC’s “Sustainable Tourism Training Program” (STTP).

Tahiti Tourisme has designated an employee, Frédéric CHIN FOO, to be responsible for the coordination and monitoring of the different actions to be undertaken. He also completed the same Sustainable Travel Course.

A development strategy coherent with the Pacific region

In parallel, Tahiti Tourisme is also collaborating with the South Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) for sustainable tourism strategy in the Pacific. This plan is titled the Pacific Sustainable Tourism Policy Framework 2030. As a result,  the development strategy for The Islands of Tahiti will be coherent with that of our Pacific neighbors.

Increasing awareness among Polynesian tourism professionals

From the start of 2023, Tahiti Tourisme has been working to increase the awareness of the importance of responsible and sustainable development among tourism professionals. To this end, Dr. David ERMEN – instructor at the GSTC, has been invited to lead workshops on sustainable tourism during several events such as: the Tahiti TourismeAnnual Conference (which included the participation of the principal service providers in the local tourist industry); the ParauParau Tahiti – PPT 2023, with an audience composed of 90 international tour operators who commercialize The Islands of Tahitiin the external markets; and the Annual Seminar of the 27 Tourism Committees from the five archipelagoes in French Polynesia.

Finally, Dr. ERMEN also held training courses for the representatives of Tahiti Tourisme, the employees of the Tourism Service, and the consultant assigned to these two structures from the Ministry of Tourism.

Public awareness

As well as increasing awareness among tourism professionals, the general public is also the target of the campaign launched in March 2023 to inform and increase awareness of the importance of responsible tourism.

The destination’s carbon footprint

The first year of implementation of the FM27 strategy will be 2023. Various actions will be undertaken by the destination. One of the major projects to be completed by the end of the year is to establish the carbon footprint of The Islands of Tahiti.
