In memory of Ahutoru, "I took the first step...".
Ahutoru was from Raiatea and of high birth. He was related to Hereiti, the chief of Hitiaa. There, he welcomed and facilitated the stay of navigator Louis-Antoine de Bougainville. When Bougainville left, he persuaded him to take him on board and complete his round-the-world voyage with him. And so, on April 15, 1768, Ahutoru set sail to become the very first Polynesian to travel "across the sky" to France.
