The Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) has carried out an assessment of The Islands of Tahiti from August to December 2023. The aim is to establish the state of our destination in relation to sustainable tourism criteria, and to identify the levers on which the destination can act.

A rigorous assessment

Supporting the FM27 strategy

Under the aegis of Dr Mihee Kang, Director of the GSTC Assurance Programme, the destination The Islands of Tahiti underwent an in-depth assessment in line with international sustainable tourism standards. From Tahiti to Rangiroa, this field audit examined local practices across four fundamental pillars: destination management and socio-economic, cultural and environmental sustainability. This report, a veritable strategic compass, lays the foundations for the future action plan for inclusive development, perfectly consistent with the Fāri’ira’a Manihini 2027 roadmap.

Developing our FM27 strategy

“This tool will serve as a basis for drawing up our action plan for inclusive and sustainable tourism development, in line with the FM27 strategy.

Between remarkable advances

And the challenges ahead

The report’s conclusions salute French Polynesia’s exemplary vision, in particular its determination to regulate tourist flows to ensure a harmonious balance with the local population. The ambition to make tourism a driver of shared benefits for all the archipelagos is recognised as a major strength. However, the audit also identifies priority areas for improvement, such as reducing dependence on fossil fuels, strengthening public transport and more integrated management of vital resources such as water and waste.

On the cultural front, the GSTC is encouraging the centralisation and digitisation of heritage to ensure its transmission and conservation. By cross-referencing these results with the carbon footprint study and satisfaction surveys, Tahiti Tourisme now has a 360° vision to transform its challenges into opportunities. This commitment to global transparency reaffirms the destination’s determination to protect its Mana while offering a responsible travel experience that meets the climatic and social challenges of our century.
