Sustainable tourism

FAPE sets up the Natura Porinetia Fund

FAPE – Te Ora Naho creates the Natura Porinetia Fund and launches its first call for projects. Tahiti Tourisme is strengthening this Fund with a scheme to collect donations from tourists to support sustainable initiatives.

“Tourism must be an engine for sustainable development that respects the environment and our culture. This collaboration with FAPE, which is creating the Natura Porinetia Fund, will enable visitors and players in the sector to make a concrete commitment to more responsible tourism”.

Jean-Marc MOCELLIN - Managing Director of Tahiti Tourisme

A lever for strengthening environmental protection initiatives and developing sustainable tourism

The creation of the Natura Porinetia Fund, on the initiative of FAPE, has several objectives:

  • For FAPE: to strengthen its support for member associations and consolidate links between the associative and economic sectors.
  • For companies, organisations and individuals: to support associations with the guarantee that the funds will be used effectively for concrete actions.
  • For associations: to meet their financing needs while supporting them in carrying out their projects.

How the Fund works

FAPE collects and manages donations to this Fund, organises Calls for Projects to select projects to be financed by the Fund and ensures total transparency on the use of donations and the results obtained. Projects may focus on the various environmental themes of sustainable development:

  • terrestrial and marine biodiversity
  • circular economy and waste reduction, *
  • decarbonisation,
  • adaptation to climate change,
  • the link between nature and Polynesian culture
  • food security,
  • preservation/natural enrichment of soils,
  • water and energy management,
  • pollution prevention and control.

FAPE also organises and sets up a Selection Committee to select the projects that win the call for projects and the “Sustainable Tourism Selection” that Tahiti Tourisme promotes to tourists.

Each year, an Assembly of Donors is held to present the progress of the projects and the moral and financial reports, as well as to strengthen exchanges.

Tahiti Tourisme strengthens the Natura Porinetia fund with

A scheme to collect donations from tourists

FAPE – Te Ora Naho and Tahiti Tourisme are joining forces to support sustainable initiatives, particularly those promoting sustainable tourism that respects our Fenua, our culture and our people. Through this collaboration between FAPE and Tahiti Tourisme, the aim is to encourage initiatives that enhance local resources, protect ecosystems and maximise the positive economic and social spin-offs for our population.

The role of Tahiti Tourisme

Tahiti Tourisme relies on the expertise and management of the Fund by FAPE to guarantee the proper use of donations.

Committed to the Natura Porinetia Fund, Tahiti Tourisme encourages the Polynesian tourism industry to contribute to this initiative by approaching FAPE to become a donor.

As a member of the Selection Committee, Tahiti Tourisme is also ensuring that the projects selected for the “Sustainable Tourism Selection” are relevant and promoting them to local and international visitors, encouraging them to support these initiatives via a forthcoming online donation platform.

The idea is that the projects chosen for this specific “Sustainable Tourism” selection should be in line with the region’s tourism development strategy, i.e. projects that meet the criteria of the GSTC (Global Sustainable Tourism Council), in particular:

  1. Environmental protection: initiatives aimed at preserving local ecosystems.
  2. Cultural preservation: promoting and safeguarding Polynesian cultural heritage.
  3. Positive economic and social impacts: supporting local communities and creating sustainable jobs.
  4. Sustainable governance: strengthening responsible management models.

HINA: the future platform to encourage tourists to make donations

HINA is the emblematic character of Tahiti Tourisme’s campaigns to raise awareness of the importance of sustainable tourism among the local population since 2023. She embodies the values of more responsible tourism and will now be talking to tourists to encourage them to contribute via a donation platform accessible to all.

HINA, which means great-grandchild in Reo Tahiti, symbolises our commitment to working today to offer a better world to future generations.

HINA’s values

  • Harmony: Promoting a lifestyle in harmony with nature and local communities.
  • Inclusiveness: Ensuring that everyone, including local people, benefits from sustainable tourism.
  • Nature: Protecting and enhancing the region’s unique biodiversity.
  • Authenticity: Showcasing local cultures and traditions with respect and integrity.

The HINA platform, which will be available in May (once the projects have been selected by the Selection Committee), will enable tourists as well as residents and businesses to contribute directly to community projects. The aim is to create a lasting positive impact while raising visitors’ awareness of the importance of their contribution.

Call for projects closes: 28 March 2025

Selection committee: April 2025 (Study and choice of projects selected)
