A true symbol of Polynesian arts and crafts, the tīfaifai occupies a special place in the homes of The Islands of Tahiti. There’s hardly a family that doesn’t own this textile masterpiece, delicately laid out on a bed or sofa, or displayed as a decorative element in its own right. At once an everyday object, a work of art and a cultural heritage, the tīfaifai embodies the warm and creative soul of The Islands of Tahiti.

Between heritage and modernity

The masterpiece of the Polynesian house

Much more than a simple piece of fabric, the tīfaifai is the keeper of family stories and the emblem of French Polynesia’s creativity. Introduced in the XIXᵉ century, this patchwork art has become a pillar of local identity, present in every home to adorn beds or celebrate life’s milestones. From lush floral motifs to symbols of protection, each stitch tells of the Polynesian people’s deep attachment to their land and history.

Exceptional expertise

By today's māmā and creators

The heart of the tīfaifai beats thanks to the infinite patience of the māmā, veritable guardians of the temple who sew these intricate mosaics entirely by hand. This precision work, which can require months of dedication, transforms the cotton into a symbol of protection and fertility, particularly at weddings when the bride and groom are wrapped in this textile cocoon. From the Austral Islands to the Papeete market, this tradition is proudly displayed, affirming its status as a major art form in the same way as carved wood and weaving.

Today, this heritage is being revitalised by talented artists such as Rava Ray. Trained at the prestigious Parsons School in New York, this craftswoman from Moorea breathes a haute couture aesthetic into the tīfaifai. By collaborating with Tahiti Tourisme on its visual identity and creating made-to-measure wedding dresses, she is proving that this textile art is not just a relic of the past, but a living form of expression capable of shining on the international catwalks while remaining rooted in the gentleness of everyday island life.
