Tourism and Sustainable Transformation

Tahiti Tourisme invites the local population and visitors to celebrate World Tourism Day on 27 September 2025 in the Quartier du Commerce, around the Fare Manihini in Papeete and in the islands, with the participation of the Tourism Committees. This year’s theme is “Tourism and Sustainable Transformation”, chosen by the World Tourism Organisation (WTO) to promote responsible, inclusive tourism that respects cultures and ecosystems.

This theme highlights the role of tourism in preserving the natural, cultural and social heritage of Tahiti and her Islands. World Tourism Day 2025 raises public awareness of sustainable practices and the importance of tourism that enhances local communities while respecting culture and the environment.

How and where to celebrate World Tourism Day?

Tahiti Tourisme offers a rich and varied programme:

  • In the centre of Papeete and around Fare Manihini :
    • Papeete market – Mapuru a Paraita: local orchestra and exhibition of local products.
    • Te Anuanua” cruise terminal at the Port Autonome: local orchestra alongside traditional crafts from the crafts department.
      Boulevard Pomere du Front de Mer: pedestrian zone open to all on Sunday 28th, with gentle sports activities, cultural workshops, family entertainment and a traditional dance show at 5.30pm.
    • Musical and artistic entertainment: concerts by the kaina trio, local bands, karaoke, traditional dance shows and ‘ori Tahiti initiations.
    • Workshops and demonstrations of processed local products, to discover the richness of local production.
      Augmented reality experiences, for a virtual journey through the five archipelagos of Tahiti and Her Islands.
  • In the city and beyond :
    • Free cultural visits to the main sites in Tahiti and Moorea: Musée de Tahiti et des Îles – Te Fare Iamanaha (Punaauia), Maison James Norman Hall (Arue), Te Fare Natura – l’écomusée de Moorea.
    • Interactive game “Discover a site”: in partnership with the Tourism Committees and the “Grall” application (Apple store – Android store), allowing visitors to discover the emblematic sites while reading their stories and legends. One visitor to each site will be drawn at the end of the JMT to receive a symbolic prize donated by Tahiti Tourisme.
    • Tahiti – Faa’a International Airport managed by Aéroport De Tahiti (ADT): musical performances by kaina trios.
      Papeete ferry terminal: entertainment with the Aremiti and Vaeara’i companies.
  • In the islands and archipelagos :
    • The Bora Bora Tourist Board is organising a series of events on Saturday 20 September in Vaitape for cruise passengers on the Norwegian of the Seas, with demonstrations by traditional craftswomen and music by a trio.

The City of Papeete’s Relaxation Day on tourism and mobility will be held on Sunday 28 September, with free access on Boulevard Pomare to the seafront, on foot, by bike or skateboard, as well as in the pedestrianised streets of the Quartier du Commerce around Fare Manihini. The programme will include a variety of interactive workshops for all the family, with activities for young and old alike, including fun face painting and tobogganing, a ‘ori Tahiti and fitness marathon, drawing and information stands to help you get involved in sustainable tourism, with the participation of local entities, not forgetting the challenges suggested by the Land Transport Department, set to kaina music and free karaoke interpretation.

Tahiti Tourisme invites everyone to come and celebrate World Tourism Day. For the occasion, Tahiti Tourisme is inviting the local population to share this celebration on the networks by wearing their best local attire and posting a photo with the hashtag #JMTauFenua.
