World Tourism Day will once again be celebrated on 27 September, as it has been every year since 1980. This year’s theme has been devised by the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) to highlight the importance of the sector in promoting peace.

Travelling to unite

The role of tourism in reconciling peoples

On 27 September 2024, French Polynesia joins the international community in celebrating World Tourism Day. Placed under the aegis of the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), this edition highlights the catalytic power of travel in promoting peace and mutual understanding. More than just an economic driver, tourism is celebrated here as a bridge between nations, capable of transforming cultural exchanges into tools for dialogue and lasting reconciliation.

Three days of festivities

At the heart of Polynesian culture

To honour this theme, Tahiti Tourisme is rolling out a rich and varied programme over three days. From Papeete to the farthest archipelagos, Fenua is transformed into a stage for sharing: exhibitions of traditional crafts at the Assembly, kaina musical entertainment at the Papeete Market and days of relaxation on a pedestrianised seafront. Free access to cultural highlights such as the Museum of Tahiti and the Islands and Fare Natura invites residents and visitors to reclaim a heritage that is, in essence, a vehicle for peace.

Innovation is also on the agenda with a life-size treasure hunt on Tahiti and Moorea via the “Grall” application, offering a fun way to discover local treasures. From welcoming visitors with flowers at airports to handing out Tahitian tiaras at emblematic sites such as Teahupo’o and Pointe Vénus, every gesture is an ode to hospitality. By inviting people to wear their best local attire under the hashtag #JMTauFenua, this celebration reaffirms that tourism in Polynesia is above all a story of the heart, respect and harmony between peoples.
