Description
A TIHOTI Tarua Event
From September 2 to 4, head to Marae Taputapuātea in Raiatea to celebrate the 3rd annual World Coconut Tree Day.
This year, the event spans three days of festivities centered on the theme “Te Hono: The Connection,” an invitation to celebrate the bonds that unite us to the land, our culture, and our homes, as well as the connections between the peoples of the Pacific.
On the program: a tour of Koko Village, cultural ceremonies on the marae, workshops, activities, and opportunities to meet the women and men who keep the coconut industry alive.
This year’s event will also feature the special presence of delegations from Hawaiʻi, Aotearoa, and Rapa Nui, who will share their expertise, traditions, and unique connection to the coconut palm.
An iconic symbol of our islands, the coconut palm has been a constant companion to the peoples of the Pacific for centuries. Brought by our ancestors during their great voyages in double-hulled canoes, it has helped to nourish, protect, heal, and rebuild homes throughout their migrations.
From one archipelago to another, it remains today a living testament to a shared history and a powerful symbol of what unites the peoples of the Pacific.
The sea has connected our peoples. The coconut palm has become its symbol.
