The Papenoo valley was formed when the crater of the Tahiti Nui volcano collapsed. The valley's 91km² watershed represents 10% of Tahiti's total surface area.
The valley of Papenoo was formed by the collapse of the crater of the Tahiti Nui volcano. An area of 91km2 which represents 10% of the total surface of Tahiti. There are numerous archeological sites for you to discover, including ancient dwelling places, basalt mines and agricultural terraces. The valley of Papenoo was formerly called Ha'apai'ano'o (the gathering of all water) due to the river which is the product of 35 tributaries over a length of 15km. It was formerly named Te Mano Rahi (10,000 warriors,) because for many centuries it was the residence of important Tahitian chieftains.Thanks to its geographical isolation in the heart of the island, there are many parts of the valley which have been preserved in their natural state, unaltered by man.
