Fakarava atoll, together with six neighboring atolls in the Tuamotu Islands, Taiaro, Toau, Niau, Raraka, Aratika and Kauehi, was recognized as a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2006 because of the truly exceptional ecosystem of marine flora and fauna.
