For this 6th edition, the concept of the competition has been modified, and it will return in a biennial format. This will make it possible to lengthen the period of work in order to obtain lasting embellishments and to involve the population of the participating communes more. More than just a competition, taking part in the beautification projects is a human adventure. Gathered around a common objective, all the participants get involved and propose projects that unite the local community.
The human and social results of the last 5 editions of this event are therefore more than positive, although certain improvements have been identified, particularly in terms of the durability of the sites embellished and the ephemeral nature of the interest shown in this embellishment by the associations.
The concept of the competition has therefore been modified along the following lines:
- To be more effective in terms of the scope and quality of the campaign, by moving away from the improvement of isolated sites towards the embellishment of public roads used by tourists;
- to obtain results that will last rather than ephemeral sites, with a works period extended to 15 months (compared with 6 previously) and maintenance of the landscaped area beyond the competition period;
- greater involvement of the general public, local authorities and, above all, tourist boards. The competition will therefore be open to local authorities with a Tourism Committee, which will be able to help organise and unite the various local players around the competition;
- the communes involved and wishing to take part will only be able to identify one association to represent them.
Tahiti Tourisme is therefore inviting the associations of Tahiti’s communes and those whose island has a Tourism Committee to register for the 2022 edition. The areas chosen for this year’s event are those with a Tourism Committee:
- Society Island: Papeete, Faa’a, Teva I Uta, Taiarapu Ouest, Tautira, Tiarei, Moorea, Raiatea, Bora Bora, Huahine, Maupiti ;
- Tuamotu Islands: Mataiva, Fakarava, Makemo, Manihi, Rangiroa ;
- Gambier Islands ;
- Marquesas Islands: Tahuata, Fatu Hiva, Hiva Oa, Ua Huka, Nuku Hiva, Ua Pou ;
- Austral Islands: Tubuai, Raivavae, Rapa and Rurutu.
Involving the Tourism Committees in the development of the competition will encourage synergies and communication between the various stakeholders. The Tourist Board will be the main contact on the ground, supporting the associations and local authorities in their beautification projects, ensuring that the rules of the competition are respected and supervising the inspection visits.
For this year’s competition, the jury will be joined by a new body, the Service des Parcs et Jardins et de la Propreté (SPJP). Each quarter, the department will carry out supervisory visits with the Comité du Tourisme and Tahiti Tourisme. The aim of these visits is to advise, train and support the participating local authorities and associations in their beautification projects.
